How India gets to work and school

In October 2026 the National Statistics Office released the first all-India survey of household travel. Between July 2025 and June 2026 its enumerators visited 14,274 villages and 10,377 urban blocks and asked 4,92,023 households, covering 20,34,371 people, how they travel to work, to school or college, on errands and on journeys that keep them away overnight. Only trips of a kilometre or more were recorded. This page draws every all-India figure the press note publishes.
