What is UDISE+ — and why it matters
Every year, every recognised school in India files a return on its pupils, teachers and facilities. Compiled by the Ministry of Education, UDISE+ (Unified District Information System for Education Plus) is the resulting census — the ground truth on what a school actually has. Learning outcomes (ASER, NAS) tell you whether children can read; UDISE+ tells you whether the classroom had a toilet, a teacher, a working light. The gap between the two is where a lot of education policy lives — and a working girls' toilet or a real pupil-teacher ratio often explains an outcome better than any slogan.

Making sense of the numbers
What the indicators mean. Facilities are the share of a region's schools that have a working feature — electricity, a functional drinking-water source, a functional girls' toilet, handwashing, a library, a playground, a ramp for disabled access, a computer, internet. Pupil-teacher ratio (PTR) is pupils per teacher at a level; the Right to Education norm is 30:1 at primary and 35:1 upper-primary, so lower is better. GER (gross enrolment ratio) can exceed 100% because over- and under-age children are counted; dropout is the share who leave at a stage; GPI (gender parity index) is 1.0 at parity, below 1 when boys are favoured.
Reading it responsibly. A facility being "present" is not the same as it being good — a toilet can exist and still be unusable, and UDISE+ is self-reported by schools, so treat very high numbers as an upper bound. Read a single district as a signal, not a verdict, and trust the direction of change more than the second decimal. The most useful comparison is a district against its own state average and its own past — both of which the explorer marks for you. Enrolment and dropout are state-level estimates only, so they are shown for states, never drilled into districts.
The long arc. Nationally, school electrification rose from about 77% in 2018-19 to 94% in 2024-25, and internet from under 19% to over 63% — real gains, unevenly shared, which is exactly what the state and district views are for.
Data pulled live from the official UDISE+ open-data service (Department of School Education & Literacy, Ministry of Education, Government of India), academic years 2021-22 and 2024-25. Every district figure was cross-checked to sum to its state total, and each state aggregate to the national figure.
