NFHS District Explorer
How did India's districts change between two national health surveys? Explore 105 indicators across 706 districts — child nutrition, anaemia, sanitation, women's literacy, immunisation and more — and see where things got better or worse between NFHS-4 (2015-16) and NFHS-5 (2019-21).
▸ How to read this map
- Each shape is a district. Its colour shows the value of the indicator you pick.
- Change mode (default): teal = the district improved since NFHS-4; coral = it worsened. Deeper colour = bigger change.
- Hover, tap, or keyboard-focus a district for its numbers; click it to open a detailed before/after panel on the right.
- Grey districts have no data for this indicator. Prefer text? Use View as table.

Sources & caveats
- Data: IIPS/MoHFW NFHS district fact sheets. NFHS-5 was fielded in 2019-21; NFHS-4 in 2015-16. Where a district reports only one round, the change cannot be shown.
- Boundaries: 2011 Census district boundaries. Districts created or split after 2011 are matched to their parent where possible.
- 12 districts are table-only: Delhi's 11 sub-districts and Mumbai Suburban have survey data but no 2011 map polygon, so they appear in the rankings, search and table — but not shaded on the map.
- Read colours with the indicator's direction in mind. For some indicators a higher number is good (literacy, sanitation); for others it is bad (stunting, child marriage). The map already flips the palette so that better outcomes read the same way — but a few indicators (e.g. sex ratio) are "direction not evaluated" and shown on a neutral diverging scale.
- Values are survey estimates with sampling error; small district-to-district differences may not be meaningful. Use this as a teaching and screening tool, not a definitive ranking.
